Chapter 06 - Structure and Effects of the APS System
Q: How does the Advanced Planning and Scheduling System manage and control schedules of orders (shipping), production (processes) and purchases?
A: The Advanced Planning and Scheduling System calculates, simultaneously, schedules for orders, production and purchases to closely observe delivery date and time, reduce lead time and keep inventories down. Below is a line diagram showing orders, product-manufacturing orders and semi-manufactures, parts manufacturing orders, purchase orders, product inventory, parts inventory and purchased product inventory.
If we were to put together systematically all of the functional features that the Advanced Planning and Scheduling System has they would be as follows.
・Connects the accepted orders, manufacturing orders and purchase orders by line.
・Takes inventory into consideration to automatically generate manufacturing orders that are insufficient because of accepted orders.
・Takes inventory into consideration to automatically generate manufacturing orders for parts that are insufficient because of product manufacturing orders.
・Calculates proper lot size when purchase orders or manufacturing orders are automatically generated.
